WHAT IS JUNETEENTH?
Juneteenth is the combination of the words June and nineteenth. June 19, 1865 is the date when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to officially free all of the enslaved people in the state.
Many people, especially Black and/or African-American citizens, celebrate Juneteenth. In 2021, the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act was signed into law making it a Federal holiday.
Slavery officially ended in the United States on Dec. 6, 1865, when the 13th Amendment was ratified by three-quarters of the then-states — 27 out of 36 — and became a part of the United States Constitution.
